Grange #132 was the local branch of a
national organization founded in 1867
for the "education and elevation of the
American Farmer." Here farmers could
learn about new techniques, and discuss
events and issues. The Grange was also
politically active, working to secure
legislation favorable to farmers. The
Grange was a semi-secret organization,
and so the building was sound-proofed on
the second floor to ensure the privacy
of meetings. A center of community life,
the building also served as a military
mess, meeting hall, polling place and
school. When the Grange disbanded, the
building was acquired by Dr. & Mrs.
Salvatore in 1973, the first structure
in what would become Historic Cold
Spring Village.
Cold Spring Grange
#132 is listed on the National and State
Registry of Historic Places.
