The Cape May Point Jail |
|
This "jail" never served as a place of
incarceration, rather it was the last
stop and a free hotel for summer
visitors and hotel staff who overdid
their drinking. The police would put
them on the trolley to get back to their
homes and hotels. If they could not
remember where they were staying, they
would be dropped off at the "jail" for
the night. When the trolleys stopped
running, there was no longer a need for
the building and it was acquired by the
Cape May Point Volunteer Fire
Department. In 1982, the Fire Department
repaired the building and donated it to
the Village. |
